In Colombia, violence and insecurity are pervasive in some neighbourhoods. Children are at high risk of recruitment into armed groups, and there are often ‘invisible borders’ controlled by rival gangs, which children can’t cross without risking their lives. Children also face high levels of sexual violence and many are affected by violence at school.
In 2017 in Colombia,
of sexual violence cases were committed against children under 18.
Each year, there are
children in Colombia being sexually abused.
Children Change Colombia deals with disadvantaged children in Colombia who are displaced, sexually exploited or recruited into armed groups. Through partnerships with local organisations, they help children and adults develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes to build protective communities that are resilient to the risks that confront them.
Children Change Colombia wants to help children create a society where their ideas and opinions are respected and included in important decisions that affect their lives now and in the future. In partnership with Colombian children’s organisations, they tackle the most neglected issues – issues that pose a serious threat to children’s rights and wellbeing, but on which insufficient work is being done to counter the harm they cause.
PROTECT A COLOMBIAN CHILD FROM SEXUAL EXPLOITATION
Protect a child living in poverty in Bogotá’s sex work ‘tolerance zone’ from being groomed and sold for sex by providing workshops that focus on raising children’s awareness of the risks of sexual exploitation and how to protect themselves on the streets and online.
GIVE A DISADVANTAGED COLOMBIAN CHILD A VOICE
Provide a 4 hour training session in children’s rights and life skills such as assertive communication, conflict resolution and planning for a positive future. With their newfound skills, a child can obtain better protection from adults around them and achieve a more fulfilling future.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
On 25 September 2015, world leaders convened to adopt the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They represent the global community’s next step in ending poverty, fighting inequality and injustice, and tackling climate change for the next 15 years. The projects from Children Change Colombia contribute to 3 of these goals. Click on the goals to find out more.
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
